At AFS, we believe that every student who wants to participate in an exchange programme should have the opportunity to do so. We understand that funding can be a significant concern, but we don’t want that to prevent you from pursuing this life-changing experience. That’s why we encourage you to apply for an AFS New Zealand Scholarship.

You can apply for a scholarship for any programme between these annual dates:

Open 1st February – Close 30th April

Decisions by the Second Week of June

Open 1st August – Close 30th September

Decisions by the Second Week of November

From 2023-2025 AFS has awarded... $436,450!

Across 67 students in three years, the AFS Educational Trust and AFS Alumni Scholarships have funded $436,450 worth of scholarships for our New Zealand students.

AFS Educational Trust Grants

As an independent legal entity, the AFS Educational Trust provides funding for a range of grants and scholarships to AFS New Zealand students from diverse backgrounds, to help with additional/partial financial support to ensure an AFS experience can be an opportunity for all.

Valued between $500-$8,000

Programme Lengths: All

These grants are awarded to applicants requiring financial assistance who fit within any of the following:

  • Māori and Pasifika students and/or;
  • Students with a Refugee background and/or;
  • Students experiencing social disadvantage and/or;
  • Students experiencing challenging life situations.
Evidence required:
  • Involvement with Te Reo or Pasifika language/s – through photos, short videos, letters of support from Matua/Whaea influences, kapa haka, Marae involvement or Polynesian/Melanesian/Micronesian Performing/School/Church Groups etc.
  • For all other applicants you need letters of support from schools, cultural tutors, government/social programmes or church ministers/pastors to support your application.

Scholarships from AFS Alumni

We are grateful to have AFS Alumni who sponsor scholarships for the next generation of Kiwi AFSers. These generous donations are for students based in certain geographic locations in NZ, excelling in academia, sports, performance, music, interested in diverse countries, who are already part of the AFS whānau and more. They greatly contribute to the AFS mission and AFS New Zealand students every year.

Valued between $500-$4,000
Programme Lengths: Semester – Year

Michael was an AFS student to Illinois, USA in 1979/1980 and like so many returnees he regarded going on AFS as a life changing experience. It was his wish to assist future AFS students to have a similar opportunity that he had.

This is a generous donation to AFS NZ from his Charitable Trust. This scholarship is for a student who will be going to a destination that is in Central and South America or Asia (excluding Japan) and who has demonstrated an excellence in the area of sports, or music, or performing arts or academia.

Evidence required
  • Certificates, awards, letters of recommendation from coaches or teachers
  • Photos, short videos

Note: ALL programme applicants are eligible to apply if they meet the criteria.

AFS NZL Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded by the AFS NZL office to students who apply & meet the criteria

Save $1,000 off the total programme fee


This discount is available all year round for family members of past participants and host families.

We want to say thank you to our past participants and host families and give you the opportunity to send an immediate family member and save $1,000 off the total programme fee.

Available for…

  • All Programme Lengths
  • All destinations except Japan
  • A student who is an immediate family member of an;
    • AFS returnee (sibling, child, grandchild)
    • AFS Host Family (child)

Note: Students eligible for this discount are able to apply for scholarships/grants but will only be awarded either the discount or the scholarship/grant.

How to apply

You will be able to apply for a scholarship through your application portal once a full AFS application has been received. The available scholarships will appear when the round is open (dates are at the top of this page). Once you apply, you will be notified when the required documentation is ready for you to submit.
