Language Immersion Awards for students

The Ministry of Education is offering a minimum of 20 fully-funded Language Immersion Awards (LIAs) for travel in 2009 to New Zealand secondary school students who study the following languages:

  • Chinese
  • Cook Island Māori
  • French
  • German
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Samoan
  • Spanish
  • Tongan
  • Vagahau Niue

Live for six months in a country where the language you study is spoken and gain understanding and skills in a real life context while living with a host family and going to a local school. Gain greater cultural awareness, knowledge and competency and contribute to the growth of New Zealand’s knowledge economy by using your new skills and knowledge in your classes when you get back home.

Awards are for language not country placements.

These awards are fully funded and applications close on 30 May 2008.

”I can’t believe that it is all over and that I am back to reality! I was pretty exhausted last week and was very grateful for a long weekend. I have spent some time reflecting and it was the most amazing experience for me – I learnt heaps and benefited so much from it..”

Loving the experience

“My Argentinean family really like the look of New Zealand, and every time they see a picture in my scrap book they say ‘que lindo’ or ‘Hermosa’ (beautiful) with a long awe-inspired sigh. I haven’t started school yet so I can’t say anything about that, but I’m sure it will be different to say the least!”

Matthew Sanders, LIA student from the North Shore to Argentina, 2007
