A Danish Efterskole is a school like no other!
Danes say that one Efterskole year is equal to 7 regular years, because you grow so much as a person. AFS NZ Returnee Lucas says that even one month was a life-changing experience: “My time at the Efterskole has allowed me to immerse myself in Danish culture, gain new knowledge, and develop valuable skills that will benefit me in the future. The friendships I have made, the lessons I have learned, and the experiences I have gained are invaluable.”

Efterskoles are boarding schools for students aged 14-18. Students typically attend for one to three years. Each Efterskole has a focus area, which can vary greatly from school to school (from sports and music to specific academic subjects), but all Efterskole subscribe to an overarching philosophy of providing enlightenment for life through holistic education.
Great emphasis is placed on social interaction, community living and each student’s personal development.

There are about 240 Efterskoles across Denmark. Approx. 20% of all Danish students attend an Efterskole for at least one year, making this institution an important rite of passage for many Danes.

At his school, Lucas experienced Efterskole life to the fullest. Through classes, after-school activities and field trips, he was able to form great bonds with his roommates and classmates: “They seemed very extremely nice and were all from different parts of the world. I was then introduced to Efterskole life, with all the activities and experiencing of different cultures.”

A weekend with a Danish host family added yet another dimension to Lucas’ programme, giving him another perspective of Danish culture and a chance to make some very special connections.

The AFS Efterskole programme is a fantastic opportunity for anyone wanting an educational experience that is totally different from anything that’s available in New Zealand or Australia. An Efterskole is not just a boarding school, it’s a cultural phenomenon and that is 100% uniquely Danish!

As an added bonus, classes are taught in English and Danish, so there’s a chance to pick up a bit of Danish – without having to worry about the language barrier.

For Lucas, it’s been a month that will stay with him for the rest of his life: “This scholarship has not only provided me with an amazing experience but also inspired me to continue embracing new experiences and accept new challenges. I will carry these memories with me always, and I am committed to applying the knowledge and perspectives I have gained to my future endeavours.”
