¡Bienvenidos a Colombia! A country known for its welcoming attitude, intersectional cultures, and abundant natural wonders, Colombia offers a host of opportunities to expand your world view. Here in the second most biodiverse country in the world, a vibrance for life is reflected in its people, history, and environment. This two week programme takes you off the tourist track to experience an authentic view into the culture through the eyes of a host family in the mountains of Popayán.
You’ll get a chance to explore the city of Popayán, which is a small-town famous for its chalk-white facades. The town was founded in 1537 and is popular for the variety of churches, museums, Pueblito Patajo, and monuments. There’s also the opportunity for horse back riding and salsa dance classes!
You will also Tour of the Puracé Natural Park, guided by the indigenous Cabildo of the region. There will be a possibility of watching and feeding Andean Condors that live in the area. These are one of the world’s largest flying birds, with wingspans over 11 ft! Following on, you’ll continue towards the viewpoint of the Laguna San Rafael, after that there will be a visit to the waterfall of Bedon, and visit the geothermal pools of San Juan. This is a place of a renowned natural beauty. Finally, hike to the volcano Puracé for an unforgettable experience.
Visit the homes that are part of the Great Corn Route. Here participants will meet, experience, and participate in the production of corn, such of arepas, tortillas, and other products made with coffee (cookies, Arequipa truffles). You’ll have the opportunity to visit a coffee farm and learn about the process.
