AFS NZ Life Member and Arthur Helm Gold Award Winner Gordon Prowse of Timaru recently presented a hugely generous gift to Hato Hone St John.
On behalf of himself and his late wife Robin (also an AFS NZ Life Member and Arthur Helm Gold Award Winner), Gordon donated a brand-new fully kitted-out ambulance to the Timaru Ambulance station.

Gordon and Robin wanted to support Hato Hone St John’s vital work in the community while also honouring AFS, another organisation very close to their hearts. In his gifting speech, Gordon emphasized the connections between Hato Hone St John and AFS. From the non-combatant volunteer ambulance drivers of the American Field Service during World Wars I and II to the remarkable and life-saving services provided today by Hato Hone St John.
Two organisations, one shared dedication to their local communities was well as a more universal, global understanding of the importance of service.

The handover of the Ambulance was a special occasion, attended by Gordon’s family and friends, including many of his AFS mates.
Former chapter presidents Colin Bishop and Murray Facer, long-serving committee members Jo Mussen and Sarah Patrick, Mrs Pam Leslie (widow of Ray), returnees Kaye Johnston (now Johnston-May, returnee to Denmark) and Gillian, one of Gordon’s daughters (returnee to Germany) were among those able to attend.
Gordon’s other daughter, Deborah (also returnee to Germany) was unable to make it from her home in Norway, but she’s the one who shared this story with us – and we’re so happy that she did!

Shelly Flintoff, Hato Hone St John Operations Manager, expressed immense gratitude: “This is an incredible legacy to leave. On behalf of every life that will be touched, saved and uplifted, thank you for your generosity. You are making a real and lasting difference.”

Gordon was delighted to see his and Robin’s vision become a reality. He also enjoyed the special treat at the end of the ceremony: “Finally, I got to work the siren and lights, be presented with a great bouquet, plus a wee model ambulance, and then be driven home in the big new vehicle by the ops manager!”

Ambulance 933, proudly bearing Gordon and Robin Prowse’s names, will serve Timaru for two years before being circulated to other areas.

The AFS New Zealand Team extends heartfelt congratulations to Gordon and Robin for this remarkable act of kindness.
We are humbled that they chose to honour the AFS legacy in this meaningful way.
