Five students from India immersed themselves in Kiwi Culture during our three-week short programme in April/May.
They travelled through parts of the North Island as a group and also spent time with billet families and visiting local schools.

Highlights of their programme (as chosen by the students) included:
- having fish ‘n chips on the beach,
- visiting the black sand beaches on Auckland’s west coast,
- the luge in Rotorua,
- staying with host families,
- experiencing school in NZ and above all,
- the friendliness of people in New Zealand.

Throughout their programme, the participants learned about the cultures of Aotearoa and how they weave into school life.
They practised and improved their language skills and grew in independence (for most of them this was their first trip by themselves).
Another surprising thing they learned was that in NZ you need to be on time, unlike in India where it is customary to arrive up to 1.5 hrs later than the time you were invited for.
While learning about New Zealand, the students also shared a lot about their own culture. They told stories about India’s colourful festivals, explained how schools are different in India and brought sweet and savoury treats to gift to their host families.
Each student had brought their traditional clothing, which they wore on several occasions.

The programme was led by Nele Meers.
Nele is an AFS returnee (Belgium to New Zealand), who says “Leading this Kiwi Culture Experience programme felt like coming full circle. Walking alongside the students as they discovered the landscapes, people, and traditions of Aotearoa brought back a flood of memories. It was deeply rewarding to be part of their growth and excitement, knowing firsthand the lasting impact it leaves. I was moved by the unwavering warmth and generosity of our AFS community. This experience reinforced how meaningful cultural exchange can be – for everyone involved.”
This programme wouldn’t have been possible without the support of some very special people, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to:
- Pukekohe High School and Tokoroa High School for giving our students a NZ high school experience,
- Heeni Dunn, Raylene Sommerville and Annette Egbers – our AFS volunteers – for organising school visits, activities and accommodation for the students,
- our wonderful host families for opening their homes and hearts to our students, providing delicious meals and organising get-togethers.
We are already looking forward to hosting another Kiwi Culture Experience group in October 2025!
