MEXT Scholarship to Japan

About this Scholarship
AFS Intercultural Programmes in conjunction with Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology – Japan, is offering an opportunity to 5 students of Japanese Language & Culture to visit Japan for one month as part of the MEXT program.
You will stay with a carefully matched host family anywhere in Western Japan for three weeks and get a taste of being a Japanese student by attending a local High School for 2 weeks. A part of this program is an orientation in Osaka for 2 days after your arrival together with participants from Australia, Korea, Thailand and Mongolia.
Who is Eligible?
To be eligible for this scholarship students must:
- Be a high school student aged between 15 and 17 years 11 months of age on 04 October 2012
- Be studying Japanese and be graded in the top quartile of your class
- Have a keen interest in Japanese culture and language
- Be capable of adjusting to the Japanese way of life
- Not have any special dietary requirements and must be able to eat fish
- Meet AFS criteria and have a proven track record of exemplary behaviour
- Attend an AFS pre-departure orientation in your region
Duration
The departure from New Zealand is on 04 October 2012 and you will say sayonara to Japan on 27 October 2012
Cost
This is a partial scholarship. The amount payable by recipients is $1,895. This covers your pre-departure preparation in New Zealand, international flights, food, accommodation, school fees, medical insurance, orientation in Japan and professional AFS support for you and your family. You will need to buy travel insurance, pay any costs for domestic travel, passports, medical examinations and allow for spending money.
