Scholarships and Grants
We believe every student who wants to go on an AFS exchange should have the opportunity to do so. Each year approximately one-in-four AFS Year Programme exchange students receive financial assistance. Plenty of AFS students also fund raise their own way overseas and received community funding.
Some the options are described below.
Scholarships
The closing date for scholarships for 2011 exchange programmes is 1 October(unless otherwise stated in scholarship description).

The scholarship application form is a part of your AFS exchange application. Download it here and email it to nzl.scholarships@afs.org once completed. Note: You can still apply for a scholarship even if you have already applied for an AFS exchange.

Grants
We expect students to fund raise to finance their exchange, but do offer grants as a last resort for those with limited fundraising opportunities. We allocate grants on the basis of financial need.
If you want to apply for a grant, your parents or guardians need to complete an application form (download form here
) and email it to nzl.scholarships@afs.org when complete. Alternatively, post it to:

For exchanges departing between January and April 2012 we will be accepting grant applications until 10 December 2011. For exchanges departing between July and September 2012 we will be accepting grant applications until 29 April 2012.By this time, we would expect that your fundraising is almost complete and any grant is needed to supplement a shortfall.

Ministry of Education Language Immersion Awards
The Ministry of Education is offering up to 15 fully funded Language Immersion Awards for travel in 2012 to New Zealand secondary school students who study the following languages.
- Chinese
- Cook Island Māori
- French
- Gagana Samoa
- Gagana Tokelau
- German
- Japanese
- Korean
- Spanish
- Tongan
- Vagahau Niue

Studylink Student Allowance
Students going on a high school exchange programme and who turn 18 at any stage during their exchange are eligible to apply for a student allowance from Studylink. Download the application form here.
