AFS Diversity Scholarships
The AFS Educational Trust offers two scholarships valued at $2,500 to AFS year programme participants.

Who is eligible?
Students must be attending secondary school at the time of application, have paid a deposit and meet AFS application guidelines. This scholarship is available to ten-month programme participants.

AFS Excellence Scholarships
The AFS Educational Trust offers up to six scholarships valued at up to $5,000 each.

Who is eligible?
Students must be attending secondary school at the time of application and meet the AFS application guidelines.
Students applying for this scholarship must demonstrate excellence in community service, academics and extra curricular activities.
This scholarship is available ten- or five-month programme participants.
Financial need will also be taken into account for a proportion of these awards.

What countries are available?
This scholarship is available for exchanges to any AFS countries.

AFS Māori/Pasifika Scholarship
AFS New Zealand offers up to two scholarships to Māori/ Pacific Island students interested in living and studying overseas. The scholarship is valued at $7,500.

Who is eligible?
To be eligible for this scholarship students must:
Be full time students and meet the AFS application guidelines
Be of Māori or Pasifika descent and demonstrate their whakapapa
Demonstrate involvement in Māori or Pasifika culture and / or language
Demonstrate a need for financial assistance
Be on a ten- or five-month programme

What countries are available?
This scholarship is available for exchanges to any AFS countries.

How to apply
Be confirmed for a ten, or five month programme
Complete the AFS scholarship application form
Demonstrate your Māori genealogy or your Pacific Island ethnicity by providing a copy of your birth certificate and/or the birth certificate of your parent(s), grandparent(s), or great-grandparent(s)
Write a 200 word statement describing your involvement with Māori/Pacific Island culture and/or language
Demonstrate a need for financial assistance and complete a 200 word statement on “Why I need an AFS scholarship”

Friends of AFS
AFS New Zealand offers one scholarship valued at $7,500 to AFS ten-month programme participants who demonstrate a need for financial assistance. These scholarships are funded by individuals who make regular donations to the AFS Educational Trust.

Who is eligible?
To be eligible for this scholarship students must:
Be attending secondary school at the time of application and meet the AFS application guidelines
Demonstrate financial need and be all-round achievers
Write an essay explaining why they deserve to be awarded this scholarship
Be a ten-month programme participant.

What countries are available?
This scholarship is available for all AFS destination countries.

Who is eligible?
Students must be attending secondary school at the time of application, meet the AFS application guidelines and be all round high achievers.
Applicants need to write a report describing the extraordinary efforts they have made to fund the exchange themselves.
Be a ten- or five-month programme participant.

AFS Chapter Scholarships
AFS New Zealand in conjunction with local AFS Chapters is offering two scholarships valued at $4,000.

Who is eligible?
Students must be attending secondary school at the time of application and meet the AFS application guidelines.
Be confirmed on a ten- or five-month programme.
Not all areas of NZ have a local AFS Chapter operating. Students need to be located in a local chapter area.

What countries are available?
This scholarship is available for exchanges to any AFS countries.

Be involved in your local AFS chapter – attend events and get to know the committee!
Your local chapter committee can then select applicants they wish to nominate for the scholarship.

South Auckland Counties Chapter Scholarship
The South Auckland Counties Chapter is offering one scholarship to a student from the Chapter going on an AFS ten month programme exchange. The scholarship is valued at $2,500.

Who is eligible?
Students must be attending secondary school at the time of application and meet the AFS application guidelines
Students applying for this scholarship must exhibit commitment to the South Auckland Counties Chapter. Student and family involvement with the community will also be taken into account
Only ten-month programme participants from the South Auckland Counties Chapter are eligible for this scholarship.

Business Sponsors
AFS is partnered with a variety of business organisations within NZ and Australia that offer scholarships to students and employees of those businesses.

Fletcher Building Employee Educational Fund

About this scholarship
The Fletcher Building Employee Educational Fund is providing scholarships to the children of Fletcher Building employees who are taking up the challenge of living and studying abroad on an AFS exchange. Scholarships of varying amounts are available depending on the length of the AFS programme chosen. Employee Educational Fund scholarships will always only be a contribution towards total costs of any exchange programme requiring the student to fund the remaining costs. The maximum scholarship available from the Employee Educational Fund is 50% of total programme costs.

Grants

Grants are offered by AFS as a last resort, for those with limited fundraising opportunities. Grants are allocated on the basis of financial need and decisions are made regarding these, after scholarships have been awarded.

If you’d like to apply for a grant, your parents or guardians need to complete an application form which can be requested about three months before your departure date by emailing nzl.scholarships@afs.org.

For exchanges departing between January – March 2018 the deadline is 18 December 2017.
