An International Experience in your Home

Host an AFS Exchange student


Have an international adventure in your home!

We are now looking for voluntary host-families nationwide for these great AFS exchange students who will be arriving January/February 2009. All host-families and students are supported by trained teams of volunteers from your local area. The students attend the family’s local secondary school, participate in community service and are between 16 and 18 years of age.

Students of the week!

Loreta – Chile, 16 years old
Loreta is close to her family and likes to go fishing, camping, cook and learn about cars with her Dad and then do ‘girly’ things with her mum! Loreta also plays rugby, is interested in learning about flora and fauna and watching movies. For the future, she plans to own a vineyard and make wine.

Sakari – Finland, 17 years old
Sakari comes from a large family he is one of 10 siblings. He can’t wait to spend a year in New Zealand to experience some unbelievable experiences. Sakari describes himself as a sporty person and enjoys football, ice hockey, skiing, snowboarding and more recently wakeboarding. Fishing is also close to his heart and says ‘there’s nothing better than fishing in a calm river with his good friends.’ Sakari hopes to become a doctor or pilot for his career.

Bailey – USA, 16 years old
Bailey is an actress/dancer in community plays and her after school activities include ballet and drama classes. She is also on the school cross country team and the city’s soccer team which she trains really hard for. Bailey hopes to become a teacher like her mum and when she not at school she spends time in the classroom with her mum teaching special needs kids. Her parents describe her as a blessing.

AFS Waitaki

Yukiko – Japan, 16 years old
Yukiko was born on Xmas day, she belongs to a Japanese archery club and practices almost everyday. Her other hobbies include tennis, cooking and calligraphy. People that know her describe her as earnest and a hard worker. Yukiko has briefly visited NZ and her family has hosted a kiwi for a few weeks she is very interested in the culture, sights and animals.

Gabriela – USA, 17 years old
Gabriela says she is the peace maker with her family and friends. She loves spending time with children and adults involved in her community. Gabriela enjoys outdoor activities like snowboarding, surfing and hiking and is willing to try anything. In the future she would like to become a physical therapist to make a difference in someone’s life everyday.

Jorge – Colombia, 16 years old
Jorge enjoys being outdoors and interacting with animals he spends a lot of time horseback riding. His chores at home include fixing up the garden and washing the car. Jorge is on the school soccer team but also practices swimming and volleyball. His plans for the future are to finish school and study Industrial Engineering.
