2009 Award recipients were Spencer McGarry from Mt Albert Grammar in Auckland and Gizem Gencel from Milli Piango Anadolu Lisesi School in Canakkale.
After staying 6 weeks with the McGarry family and tripping around the country, Gizem left NZ on May 2nd, returning to Turkey. While in NZ Gizem took part in the ANZAC Day commemorations in Wellington and made a presentation at the National Service.
Spencer spent 6 busy weeks in Turkey staying with the Gencel family. He arrived back in NZ on April 29th, in time to spend a few days with Gizem before she returned to Turkey. Throughout his time in Turkey Spencer took part in Turkish and New Zealand ANZAC ceremonies, speaking The Ode at the NZ service, and proved to be an excellent ambassador for AFS and New Zealand.
