Volunteering with AFS

Make a World of Difference – Volunteer with AFS

If you are interested in the following then you should be getting involved with AFS:

  • learning about other countries and cultures
  • interacting with people who share a sense of adventure
  • fun activities and gatherings the whole family can enjoy
  • promoting peace and understanding
  • making friends and contacts from all over the world

Roles

A variety of roles are available to suit your preferred time commitment, including:

  • Supporting a local student and/or their host family
  • Interviewing potential AFS students and/or host families
  • Representing AFS at an exhibition or community event
  • Assisting with building AFS relationships with schools
  • Helping with the coordination of AFS chapter activities

Skills

You might possess knowledge and experience in a certain field that would be of benefit to your local AFS chapter, such as accounting or finance, IT, event management, team building, media, PR or English tutoring.

Resources

Providing resources such as the following is another way of making a valuable contribution to AFS.

  • Providing wall space to promote the AFS message within your business or sport/interest group via AFS posters and brochures
  • Providing a meeting place for AFS gatherings
  • Sponsoring outreach activities for students and families

“This is an organisation which has enormous capacity to make positive change in the world, enabled by the work volunteers undertake. To work for AFS is both exciting and challenging, as there are always new perspectives, new beliefs and cultural differences to consider and learn, as well as a world of like minded people to meet and share our dreams with.”

Claire Becker Gledhill, AFS Christchurch Pegasus Chapter

“Why have we been involved with AFS since 1988? – It’s the people, the AFS kids, the huge expansion to our lives and outlook, and the invaluable intercultural competency learning and cultural self-efficacy that the AFS organisation imparts on all of its participants.”

Leo & Catherine Hitchcock, AFS North Shore Chapter
