Asia:NZ Foundation/AFS Educator Award

In 2008, the Asia:NZ Foundation and AFS provided an eight three-week teaching scholarships to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India or the Philippines. During their stay, teachers have the opportunity to experience school and home life in Asia.

Educators are given the opportunity to share their skills and learn new ones in educational institutes and live in another culture as a member of a host family, where they will gain a deeper knowledge and respect for cultural differences.

The aim for these teachers is to share and apply their knowledge and skills with their school and the wider community upon their return to New Zealand which can include the production of teaching resources, both paper and web-based.

The partnership between the Asia:NZ Foundation and AFS began in 1996 and the first group of teachers completed their scholarships in 1997.

Confidence in Thai

“The programme was more than I expected. It was detailed and encompassed many aspects of Thai culture almost every minute of the day. The school visits were very valuable, professionally. I now have increased confidence to encourage those around me to be positive about cultural differences regarding Asia, both at home and at school.”
